How long is a session?
A free 20 minute in-person or phone consultation is provided to discuss what I offer and what you’d like to get out of therapy. By the end of our call you should have a good idea whether or not you want to work with me. This call also gives me information on how I can best meet your needs; if I feel that i'm not the right therapist for you, I will give you an appropriate referral to someone I think could help you.
Follow up appointments are 50 minutes and are typically scheduled weekly unless other arrangements are made.
80 minute sessions are generally recommended for individuals/couples who would like to get more done in a single session, in addition to the first few sessions for couples that are working through betrayals.
How many sessions do I need?
This varies greatly from person to person depending on whether you seek marital preparation, have a deep history we need to work through, or just to make some minor tweaks in your life. This, coupled with the effort you put in outside of therapy, will help answer these questions. In my experience, clients who’ve had the most impactful, persistent shift in the trajectory of their futures have come between an average of 8 to 30 sessions.
Do you offer a reduced fee?
I believe therapy should be accessible to everyone; for this reason I have a limited number of reduced fee weekly appointments (based on financial hardship). Please contact me to discuss further.
Where are you located?
I am located in California and due to the Coronavirus Pandemic all sessions are currently begin conducted virtually through a secured video platform and will continue to be this way for the foreseeable future.
When and how can I schedule appointments?
New clients please schedule your first appointment during your initial phone consultation. Current clients may access the online client portal to make appointments.
What if I need to cancel an appointment?
If you must cancel an appointment, please do so 48 hours prior to your scheduled appointment. Clients who miss appointments without canceling 48 hours in advance will be charged the full session fee. For your convenience, if you have a phone, smartphone, tablet, or computer you can still make your appointment via a tele-session if you are short on time or not feeling well.
How do I complete intake paperwork?
Intake paperwork is completed after the (optional) 20 minute consultation. It is completed online through an electronic records system that keeps your information secure.
Can therapy help me?
Therapy can give you support, validation, coping skills, and strategies to change your perspective and your behaviors. It can give you greater peace of mind and help you navigate difficult feelings and situations. It can give you a “corrective emotional experience.” Your therapist creates a safe, confidential, judgement-free space for you to express yourself authentically and may “get” you in a way no one else has. When this happens, it can be extremely powerful and transformative.
Therapy cannot change other people or external circumstances. Therapists provide psychoeducation, feedback, and guidance. I can't tell you how long it will take for you to feel better. Generally, the more you put into therapy, the more you get out of it.
When is couples therapy recommended?
Preparing for marriage
Preparing for having children
Power struggles
Communication issues
Sexual dissatisfaction
Infidelity
Prior to or during life adjustments
Frequent conflict or high stress levels
Conflicting ideas of childrearing
How often do we meet?
I recommend meeting once a week initially so we can jump right in to working on your goals. Depending on your needs, sometimes it’s appropriate to meet every other week, instead of weekly. As you progress, we can reduce sessions to monthly appointments or to less frequent “tune ups” to support and maintain your progress.
Do you provide therapy via video?
Video sessions are offered through a secure video platform for all clients. This is a helpful tool that makes it possible to attend all your scheduled appointments no matter where you are. All you need is an internet connection and a computer, phone or tablet.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for me?
Therapy/Coaching is an investment of your time and resources, which is why I offer a free 20 minute consultation. By the end of our call you should have a good idea of whether or not you want to work with me. This call also gives me information on how I can best meet your needs; if I feel that I'm not the right therapist for you, I will give you an appropriate referral to someone I think could help you.
I don't live in California. Can you still be my therapist?
I am only licensed to practice therapy in the state of California. However, I can and do provide individual and relationship coaching for people outside of California. Coaching is different from therapy, which focuses on working through emotions and experiences. Coaching focuses more on setting and achieving goals. It is more directive and solution focused than therapy.
What if I can’t make it to your office?
I provide video or phone-based therapy options using a secure, HIPAA-compliant video conferencing platform for your privacy. This could be an option for you if:
You live in an area with fewer therapists
You have a tight schedule and don't want to worry about commuting
You are homebound due to being ill
