Marriage Preparation
So many of us prepare for the wedding; finding the right venue, hiring the wedding planner, the florist, the DJ, the caterer, the wedding party. Goodness, the list is endless, to have that one perfect DAY or week (depending on your family traditions). But how many of us prepare for our marriage? You know, THE REST OF YOUR LIFE after the wedding? According to a survey published in the Journal of Family Psychology, couples with premarital education reported higher levels of relationship satisfaction and experienced a 30 percent reduction in the likelihood of divorce over five years. Marriage education can be the difference between happily ever after and “what did I get myself into?” A few of the things we will discuss in marriage preparation include, but are not limited to:
Effective communication
Conflict resolution
Roles and responsibilities
Parenting styles and expectations
Financial management and expectations
In-law relations
Spiritual, emotional, physical health and expectations
This is not just the hypothetical questions; what your dream home is, what you wish to accomplish in your life, or what type of movies you both enjoy watching. This is the everyday, tangible things that will impact the trajectory and happiness of your life:
What cultural influences are you going to incorporate into your relationship?
When do you plan to start having children?
How will you make decisions?
How do your principles and values translate into your daily life?
Will you be putting your children in daycare?
What are you and your partner's family’s involvement in your life?
How will you spend special events and holidays?
